Room Tour: A local interior designer’s jewel box of a dining room

Local interior designer Anne Underwood has treasured her grandmother’s antique sofa for years. She knew it needed its moment, and when she reupholstered it in her favorite shade of green, it became the star of her dining room.

When Underwood moved into this home in 2017, her vision for the room was to make it warm and have that “candlelit vibe,” she says. For the walls, she had peach and rose gold hues in mind. While the flesh-like tone she ultimately selected was unusual for the time, it set the stage for the jewel box of a space.

Then, the room’s empty wall, surrounded by 8-foot-tall ceilings and multiple windows, caught Underwood’s eye.

“I just felt like this one wall was super plain and it really needed some depth,” she says. “So I came up with the idea of doing antiqued mirrors on the wall, and it completely transformed the room.”

After M&M Glass completed the installation, Underwood considered the furniture layout. Keeping with the space’s unique yet warm and inviting feel, she placed her grandmother’s antique couch against the mirrored wall to serve as seating at the table.

“It’s a little unconventional, but when the mirror went up, I thought we really needed something to anchor against it,” she said.

Staying true to the sofa’s dark wooden accents, she commissioned Conrad Freeman to create a custom walnut tabletop for the antique-brass table base she sourced. The striking blue velvet-covered chairs she found from Johnathan Adler are just a few of the new items in this primarily vintage space.

By adding antique candlesticks and light fixtures, along with a simple textured rug, Underwood achieved the charming, quirky feel she adores in homes. Lastly, the final touch was a large artwork by Hayes Friedman sourced from Anne Connelly Fine Art.

“What I love about antiques is that you don’t have to worry about getting a small scratch on a 100-year-old piece. It’s just part of it,” she explained. “It takes the stress off, and you don’t need perfection, but you get something functional.”

With a fully mirrored wall, jewel-toned seating and lovely feminine details, the space is a true jewel box, evoking a unique sense of the past with a beautifully modern twist.
