On Exhibit: ‘Dressing Louisiana’ at the LSU Textile and Costume Museum

The LSU Textile & Costume Museum’s newest exhibition debuted on October 5, and it’s all about local style. Dressing Louisiana: Histoires de la mode de la Louisiane showcases the history of fashion in Louisiana, with a special spotlight on The Register editor Orene Muse.

A socialite and journalist known for her show-stopping hats, Muse and her social magazine served as the inspiration for the creation of inRegister, as well as founders Wanda Horn and Chris Russo Blackwood’s embrace of hats as an early inRegister signature. Many of Muse’s over-the-top chapeaus will be on display alongside other pieces of local fashion history.

Many pieces from New Orleans fashion designer Ray Cole were featured throughout the exhibit.

Curator Dr. Michael Mamp spoke passionately about the pieces he has been able to acquire in the process of creating this exhibit. “I have touched every single object in the collection, and in the process of touching those objects, fell in love with them and also with Louisiana,” Mamp notes.

Over the past three years, he has successfully amassed a substantial collection of historic Louisiana pieces. In doing so, he has found that he doesn’t just want to showcase the clothing on display, but the people who wore it. “We can tell people’s stories through fashion, and I think that draws me to the work that I do,” Mamp says.
