Dress for Success: What to know About women’s suiting

The key to a successful suiting appointment is finding the fit that reveals and builds a client’s confidence. Emma Spencer, custom clothier at Pearce Bespoke, breaks down the top tips and trends in women’s suiting to help prepare potential buyers for a great fitting.

Getting Acquainted

Starting with the basics, Spencer names three suiting terms to know: lapel, thread count and single- or double-breasted. In other words: collar style, durability/weight and blazer style. The right balance of these defines suiting for different climates, styles and professions.

“A good range for Louisiana weather would be thread counts of 110s to 140s,” Spencer advises. Next, it’s about finding the right fit, and the following tips require some reflection.

“First, survey your closet,” Spencer says. “See what works and what isn’t working for you.”

She suggests rebuying pieces you already wear and love in other colors to diversify your wardrobe without straying from your personal style. To make this approach even more effective, Spencer recommends getting a color analysis or sticking to the favorites you feel best in.

“The first suit doesn’t have to be rocket science; it’s just your first step,” she says.

Popular Styling

Elements like double-breasted blazers, pinstripes and the peak lapel are all gaining traction. And as for the overall vibe, Spencer says more women are experimenting with chic, vintage looks, but modern flair is still a popular twist.

Finally, the right finishing touches complete the look, and the suit’s shape and color are key to that decision. Spencer says wide-legged pants pair well with a bootie, while straight-leg pants are sharpened by a stiletto or kitten heel.

“I have loved seeing some women add a tie or cufflinks for extra pizzazz,” Spencer notes.

Personalization doesn’t have to stray from professionalism, and blending the two effectively will leave you feeling fashionable and empowered in every room you enter.

Smart Clothier, Savvy Suit

Spencer got her start in styling with Pearce Bespoke through a lifelong interest in fashion and a background in retail. Her passion for inspiring wardrobe choices, combined with a short suiting checklist, helps her find the right look for each client.

“I love hearing others’ stories and creating a space in the middle of their busy day where they can feel in charge and cared for,” Spencer says.
