On the Fringe: How to incorporate this hallmark of the maximalist revival

Fleeting trends are giving way to deeply personal interior designs, where elements are intentionally layered to convey personality and evoke emotion, regardless of whether monochromatic neutrals or dark, moody aesthetics are in vogue at the moment.

As Mary Catherine Dansky with Dixon Smith Interiors reported from High Point Market, a desire for meaningful expression has sparked a maximalist revival, with layered textures like fringe leading the charge.

“The modern eye wants both interesting details and a place to rest,” explains interior designer Rachel Cannon of Rachel Cannon Limited Interiors.

Fringe is typically a hard pass for homeowners with active, sensory-seeking pets. But it’s an ideal complement to many different room designs, adding some sway and drama to the decor.

“In the past, when interiors used a lot of fringe details, the rest of the design was a little fussy—cabbage rose prints, chintz and drapery with heavy swags and jabots,” says Cannon. “The way we’re using them today is within the context of a much more tailored interior.” For example, including a bullion fringe detail on a sofa skirt instead of adorning every pillow and all of the drapery in fringe.

Incorporating eyelash fringe on custom pillows and drapes is typically the most palatable way to incorporate the texture, Cannon notes. “I think it works best in rooms where layers are important in creating the vibe of the space,” she explains. “It wouldn’t work in a midcentury modern or contemporary space at all.”

When done well, fringe is a bit of lagniappe, not the focal point. And that is the mark of a true maximalist design.

“Maximalism never left RCL Interiors, we just repackaged it and called it ‘vibrant traditionalism,’ Cannon explains. Just how many layers you want to add is up to your vision, personality and the purpose of the room. “My best advice is to stop paying attention to whatever is trending and learn what you really love,” she says. “If the trend is saying something is ‘back,’ there’s a good chance it never left in the first place for the people who are in the know.”
