A new mural outside of David Vincent Martial Arts & Fitness paints Mid City with themes of self mastery
While Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month just came to an end with the beginning of June, Baton Rouge is not done celebrating.
Through a new mural outside of David Vincent Martial Arts & Fitness (DVMA), artist Ellen Ogden tells a visual story celebrating culture, community and personal growth. From flowing water representing clarity and preparation to a sun representing life force and forward movement, the piece blends Filipino mythology, traditional tattoo symbolism, martial arts philosophy and Louisiana’s natural landscape.
“This mural represents what martial arts truly is—discipline and creativity working together,” David Vincent says. Exploring themes of self-mastery, Ogden’s piece paints a part of Mid City with values deeply connected to martial arts training and community development.
“We wanted to create something that not only reflects our values, but also contributes something meaningful and beautiful to Mid City,” says Vincent.
