For mom-to-be Emily Moore O’Krepki, bringing her baby’s nursery to life was a labor of love, mixing DIY projects with handcrafted heirlooms for a dreamy yet functional space. With help from her mother, Brandi Moore, and the discerning eye of her sister, Mae Moore, who is an aspiring interior designer, bringing the look together was a group effort.

First, Emily selected a palette that started with the wallpaper, which she chose for its muted, foggy blue hue.

“I remember the day we got the wallpaper installed, and the room looked completely different,” she recalls. “It definitely started to make everything in pregnancy feel more real.” Touches of wicker through accessories create a textured and serene space.

Modifications to the room’s original features helped save on renovation and furniture costs. The two closets with built-in drawers between them are a welcome layout for a child’s bedroom, and particularly a nursery. Removing a drawer lowered the built-in chest of drawers to waist height, turning it into a changing table with ample storage.

Sanding, repainting and adding new hardware to the built-ins gave them new life. By strategically mixing DIY projects like the built-in refurbishments with budget-saving elements like the drawer pulls from Amazon and more expensive items added through the larger furniture, the design feels cohesive and high-end across the board.

But some pieces included in the design are simply priceless. Emily’s favorite part of the space is the four framed, needlepointed pieces, completed by her mom.

“It was the sweetest gift, and I know that needlepoint takes so much time and effort, but I am so grateful that she spent the time to do that, because they couldn’t be more perfect for the room,” Emily says.

With Rhodes as Brandi’s first grandchild and Emily’s firstborn, the personalized pieces create nursery walls that tell a sweet story. Thinking back to when the room was first being designed, Emily is thankful to now be living in the space, enjoying a blissful start to motherhood.

“The process was exciting and surreal, because it’s like, oh my gosh, one day my little boy is going to be here—and now he is here, and we get to use this space every day,” Emily says. “It was so fun, especially getting to do it with my mom and sister.”
