Fall gardening tips

For a gorgeous yard all winter long, spend some time in the garden soon. Scott Ricca, of Clegg’s Nursery, suggests planting snapdragons and petunias, as cold temperatures rarely disturb these flowers. He also likes alyssum, a small border plant, to add fragrance. Over at Garden District Nursery, owner Gordon Mese recommends pansies and violas. “As long as your garden receives four hours of sunlight each day, your plants will thrive through the winter,” Mese says. But don’t delay: He points out that by Thanksgiving, regular inventory at many nurseries will be supplanted by poinsettias and other holiday trimmings.
