If you’re looking to add unexpected drama and sophistication to your home, start at the top. Wallpapering the ceiling, once considered a bold move, is quickly becoming a coveted design trend in spaces like dining rooms, bedrooms and entryways. Baton Rouge-based artisan Lauren Buckholtz, founder of Perla Paperhanging, is at the forefront of this ceiling-centric movement.

“People often overlook the ceiling, but it’s the perfect canvas to add interest and elegance,” Lauren says. “It can completely transform the mood of a room, especially when paired with the right lighting and architecture.”

Roughly half of Lauren’s projects now involve ceiling installations, where she works with luxurious wallpapers from renowned brands like Gracie, Schumacher, Phillip Jeffries and Susan Harter. Her meticulous approach and eye for detail have made her a go-to expert for homeowners and designers looking to elevate their interiors.

Lauren’s love affair with wallpaper began in an unexpected way while settling into her family’s historic home in West Baton Rouge. “The ceilings in the parlors were adorned with exquisite wallpaper, and I was captivated by the craftmanship and elegance it brought to the space.”

At the time, Lauren was transitioning from a successful corporate career and saw an opportunity to turn her passion for design into a profession. “There was a noticeable shortage of skilled wallpaper installers, and clients were facing long wait times,” she explains. “I wanted to bridge that gap by offering meticulous, high-quality installations.”

To do that, Lauren trained at the only dedicated wallpaper hanging school in the country, located in Vermont, and apprenticed under a master paperhanger. Her rigorous training instilled a deep respect for the artistry and precision the craft demands.

Today, Perla Paperhanging is known for high-end installations that combine technical expertise with a designer’s eye. Whether it’s a serene grasscloth accent wall or a statement-making mural on the ceiling, Lauren brings a level of care and artistry that transforms ordinary spaces into works of art.

Her work was recently featured in Garden & Gun magazine for an installation of Adelphi historical reproduction wallpaper — an honor that affirmed her dedication to preserving and advancing the art form.

“Wallpaper is back, and it’s here to stay,” Lauren says. “People are seeking ways to infuse personality and elegance into their homes. Wallpaper, especially on the ceiling, is one of the most impactful ways to do that.”
