Since its establishment in 2011, The Life of a Single Mom has assisted over one million single mothers nationwide. And now, the Baton Rouge-born nonprofit is expanding its reach even further.

For the last three years, the organization has been implementing pilot programming for all women, rather than just single mothers. Officially announcing the rebrand to Unstuck Ministries at a luncheon in May, the group is excited to see how the team’s work will help improve the lives of even more women.

Around the same time pilot programming began, founder and CEO Jennifer Maggio released her sixth book, titled Unstuck, after a nine-year hiatus from writing.

“It just took off,” she says. “This idea of becoming unstuck resonated with so many people, including both single and married women who feel stuck in life, and that seemed to be a conversation that we were frequently having here at the office.”

Asking the question “Are you ready to become unstuck?” is an important part of the organization’s new format. “As a nonprofit, we are putting a level of ownership and responsibility on the clients we serve,” Maggio explains.

Maggio says that by bringing in at-risk women who are ready to become unstuck, the organization is adding single-motherhood prevention as another pillar of its work.

“I think that one of the biggest questions every nonprofit should ask is, ‘What would it look like to work yourself out of a job?’” she says. “That you would be so successful in the mission of your organization, that there would no longer be a need.”

By expanding the organization’s reach, the Unstuck Ministries team hopes to give all motivated women the opportunity to thrive. For Maggio, the only worry with this change was that some of the single mothers may feel slighted.

“But we are so grateful that they are all in agreement that this is for all women, and that nobody gets left behind,” she says. “They are excited that there are opportunities for perhaps their sister, mother or friend who previously would not have been able to come to now come get the help they need.”

With programs like an annual boot camp, a national conference, counseling and case management, as well as webinars, events, and more, now open to all women, Unstuck Ministries is giving motivated women the tools to make real changes in their lives—no matter their marital or motherhood status.

While furthering the mission through prevention, all single mom-centric programming, such as the Single Mom University online course and single mom support groups, will remain single mom-only, ensuring the nonprofit’s original mission is not diluted.

Maggio admits that it would have been easier continuing along with The Life of a Single Mom organization as it was, but she felt a strong calling to broaden their assistance to help even more women.

“I’m excited because I know that God said to do it,” she says. “I think the favor of God on our organization has been what has contributed to its longevity, and I’ll continue on the work that I’ve been called to do.”
