Between the Lines: Terry Saban’s favorite tailgate food
In the July 2000 issue of InRegister, Terry Saban, wife of then-LSU head football coach Nick Saban, shared how she gears up for tailgates, including her favorite go-to game-day recipe.
Terry revealed that she hadn’t spent much time in Baton Rouge before her husband accepted the position, although she had heard a lot about the warm southern hospitality and Louisiana cuisine.
“Of course, the food always tastes better when you’re winning, and we’re planning on winning some games,” Terry says in the original story. As history goes, Tiger fans welcomed the Sabans with open arms, and Terry made a point of becoming an active member of the LSU community.
She joined the Bengal Belles and even shared her favorite tailgate dish with inRegister. So it’s safe to say Terry and Nick Saban both left their mark at LSU.
While head coach Nick Saban may have left the Tigers in 2004, his wife’s inRegister recipe will live on forever in our archives. See the full recipe for Terry Saban’s Tailgate Pizza Bites below.
Terry Saban’s Tailgate Pizza Bites
This recipe is from the inRegister archives and is presented in its original format.
- Thaw frozen bread loaves (or leave in refrigerator overnight). Roll out on a floured board to pizza-dough thickness.
- Spread with a thin coat of pizza sauce or spaghetti sauce. Layer with favorite ingredients, such as pepperoni, ham, sliced green peppers, sliced onions and slices of black olives.
- Then, layer with cheese, such as provolone or mozzarella.
- Gently roll the entire pizza and place seam side down on a greased cookie sheet.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 20-30 minutes or until brown. Cool and slice.
If you make the night before, cover with a tea towel and slice at the game.
