Modernizing and customizing an outdoor space for year-round comfort

When looking for one source to make the most of their outdoor space, a local family reached out to Chris Sanderson, owner of EcoRegions Landscape Architecture and Outdoor Construction and now Russell Pool Company. As a local one-stop shop for outdoor space design, Sanderson and his team knew just how to keep these clients comfortable on chilly winter nights and sultry summer days.
As a landscape architect, Sanderson knows how to plan a cohesive space. These clients had an existing space they wanted updated and customized to fit their lifestyle while complementing the traditional style of their home. With a home situated on the golf course in the Country Club of Louisiana, the existing pool and kitchen areas did not fit their needs for outdoor living.
Sanderson says, “The clients’ priority was all season comfort, so we designed the upgrades to their space to meet that goal.”
Russell Pools removed the existing pool and replaced it with one twice the size and added a spa while working with Sanderson and the EcoRegions team. The collaboration continued throughout the outdoor kitchen, dining area and fireplace. Both teams worked to modernize the functionality of the space with new plumbing and electrical work.
The hardscape design supported the traditional style of the home with classic brick and bluestone. To tailor options for privacy, Sanderson’s team installed a wall of shutters to define the kitchen and entertainment space. Sanderson said this gave the clients and their guests a barrier from passing golfers.
“The clients told us they wanted to be able to spend as much time outside as possible and be comfortable,” says Sanderson. “So, we gave them the features they needed to enjoy their space anytime.”
The Russell Pools and EcoRegions teams’ design plan and execution included detailed features the homeowners will use in both cold and hot weather. For the cold winter nights, the design included a spa, heated pool and fireplace. For those hot humid summer evenings, a chiller was added to keep the pool a relaxing and refreshing temperature.
Any season in Louisiana can bring extreme weather. The teams built the outdoor kitchen area with protection from the elements including wider eaves and lower beams to add shade and keep out rain and wind. Sanderson’s team also installed a mosquito abatement system, a behind-the-scenes feature that provides comfort on any South Louisiana summer night.
Sanderson and his team softened the finished space with lush landscaping. The softscape design framed in cozy, private nooks and preserved the clients’ view of the Country Club’s golf course.
