‘Of Mind and Music’ at the Manship

The Manship Theatre carries on its tradition of screening powerful, homegrown features with Of Mind and Music, an award-winning film directed by Baton Rouge native and independent filmmaker Richie Adams, which will play at the theater tomorrow, Friday, Jan. 29.

Inspired by the book Una Vida: A Fable of Music and the Mind, the film tells the tale of neuroscientist Dr. Alvaro Cruz (Joaquím De Almeida), who returns to his New Orleans home after a lecture in Paris and discovers that his mother has succumbed to Alzheimer’s Disease in his absence. Suddenly lost in the city of color and jazz, Cruz crosses paths with a guitarist named Stompleg (Bill Cobbs) and a street musician named Una Vida (Aunjanue Ellis, who also co-stars in the upcoming The Birth of a Nation), a young woman whose memory has been fading day by day. Together they embark on a story of loss, the spirit of New Orleans and the power of music.

Of Mind and Music won several awards at various festivals in 2014 and 2015. In the meantime, Adams continues to find success in the Pelican State, where he founded River Road Creative, an Emmy-nominated live-action studio specializing in design for film and television. As a special treat, Adams will also be present for a Q&A session after the 7 p.m. show.
