Cyrus Chestnut Trio closes out River City Jazz Masters

This year marks the 10th anniversary of River City Jazz Masters, the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge’s collaboration with the River City Jazz Coalition to bring some of the world’s finest jazz musicians to perform in Baton Rouge. The series has hosted Grammy-winning artists, National Medal of the Arts winners, MacArthur Genius Fellows and nominees for Latin Grammy, Tony, Emmy, and Golden Globe awards. This year’s lineup has already included a range of artists in traditional jazz and Latin.

For its closing performance, Jazz Masters has invited the Cyrus Chestnut Trio to the Manship Theatre next Wednesday, March 30. Originally from Baltimore, Chestnut is a world-renowned classical and jazz performer who tours to jazz festivals, clubs and concert halls all around the world.

“I believe the ability to play music is a gift from God, and every time I play I’m thankful. Every time I sit down to play, for me, is worship and expression,” he told DownBeat magazine.

His prowess as a soloist has also led him to the piano chair in big bands like the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Dizzy Gillespie Big Band and Carnegie Hall Jazz Orchestra.
