Dish: Roman’s Veggie Plate

The veggie plate is a staple at Baton Rouge’s numerous Greek and Lebanese restaurants, but a year ago Roman’s Café retooled its options in tasty fashion. “We wanted it to be healthier,” says owner Rafat Roman, “and we wanted to give more choices.” Now diners can select from longtime favorites such as homemade hummus, baba ghanoush, falafel, spinach pie and vegetarian dolmas (grape leaves), or they can sample newcomers such as fresh sautéed spinach with onion slivers, broiled squash, zucchini and bell peppers, and broiled Roma tomatoes. The portions are plenty, the colors bright, and the flavors—big.
