Growing Home: A local florist shares the trends for homecoming florals
High school homecoming is a time-honored tradition, typically including a series of celebratory events with everything from football games, parades, a royal court and of course, the big dance.
But one small, yet defining part of this tradition has been slowly changing over the years: the decorative flowers worn to the dance.
“Twenty years ago, guys ordered their date a wrist corsage filled with polyester ribbon and faux silver leaves,” Meredith Cooper of Forage Floral Design says. “In Baton Rouge in 2026, girls now carry small posies that coordinate with their dresses, and our clients at Forage are folks who have taste in dance flowers that are current and something that they’d like if it were in a vase in their homes.”
Cooper explains that when it comes to specific flower trends, the Forage team steals a bit from the current wedding bouquet trends, and the bouquets vary to complement the dress that will be worn.
“For example, the year of the Barbie movie, we made so many pink-filled bouquets,” she says. “And prom last year saw a request or two for the very popular hanging green amaranthus.”
And as the times change, so do the trends, whether that’s the type of flower or color combination in an arrangement, or going from wearing a frilly wrist corsage to carrying an elevated bouquet.
