From the Archives: Light Years

“It was Christmastime in 1948, just as crowded as this, when we worked feverishly to get a magazine together so that it might be issued on January 1, 1949, as our town jumped from a town to a city overnight,” reads the editorial postscript from the December 1956 issue of our predecessor, The Register, reflecting on the very first issue of the publication. “Frankly, we have been so busy working with the magazine we almost forgot how the years were passing.”

Nearly 70 years later, that testament to time still rings true—as well as the sentimentality of the holiday season. The months continue to pass quickly, but this time of year offers a chance to slow down and grow closer to the loved ones we hold near and dear.

This year was an exciting one for the inRegister editorial team, with the release of 12 issues chronicling the milestones and moments that define, and enrich, Baton Rouge. And as our city continues to grow and evolve, we are never short on feel-good features to share with our readers, without whom, none of this would be possible.

As we finish the final issue of 2025, we extend our sincerest thanks for the encouraging community support—from 1956 to 2026. “Forget the years we may, but we will never, never forget your kindness to us and your great generosity,” the postscript continues. “We are deeply grateful.”
