With showers on the radar, colorful nuptials brightened up this sunless wedding day

No couple wants to hear that there’s a chance of rain on their wedding day, but that’s exactly what Maggie Breeland and Caleb Passman had to plan for. Of all days, pesky rain clouds hovered over Infinity Farms in Carriere, Mississippi, on their March wedding date.

“The week before, I started stressing about the rain,” Maggie recalls. “But everyone was like ‘There’s a wedding day magic where everything is just fine.’”

With outdoor tents, second-line umbrellas, bold décor and colorful bridesmaids’ dresses, that statement proved to be true.

With Maggie’s color palette of pinks, oranges, yellows and purples (one she decided on—and pinned on Pinterest—early on) and the help of planner Angela DiVincenti Babin of Angela Marie Events & Florals, the venue was transformed, bringing some much-needed brightness into the space with blooms and mismatched linens. Maggie says she didn’t want any aspect of her wedding to be boring.

It all started with an outdoor ceremony that gave “garden vibes,” according to Maggie. Guests were kept safe from any potential drizzles under a draped tent. Grand bouquets set the stage, but more added hues came from wedding guests who took the couple’s dress code of “colorful formal cocktail attire” very seriously.

“I just love color,” Maggie says. “I love a good black and white wedding, but I feel like it should be lively, and I just wanted everyone to kind of match the vibe. … I was like, ‘As much color as possible, no denim.’ And no one disappointed.”

The mood was further set by Baton Rouge’s The Original Magnolia String Quartet. Tunes ranged from “Yellow” by Coldplay to “Kiss” by Prince. The quartet continued, backing the chatter of the colorful cocktail hour where guests grabbed from an Asian-inspired selection of passed apps from Gilded Artichoke Catering Co. and washed down bites with drinks from Tippy Tap Co.

It was at this point in the day that a sprinkle finally made itself known, so per advice from Babin, Caleb and Maggie cut the cocktail hour short with a second line to the reception. The couple’s decorative parasols and guests’ clear umbrellas doubled as dance props and rain coverage.

Inside, it didn’t take long for the dance floor to fill with a sea of the Passmans’ favorite people. Lafayette wedding band Rouge Krewe kept the vibe alive with high-energy covers and fog guns, inviting Maggie and Caleb on stage to handle them.

As a bride who loves details, it was important for Maggie to fill the day with little nods to things she and Caleb loved. The result was a collection of personalized touches that almost allowed for a game of I Spy. Inside Caleb’s custom suit from Stitched in Las Vegas was the toile designed by Fleur Art & Designs that was used for the wedding invitation envelope. And guests could spot the couple’s pup Sprig on cocktail napkins.

But there was more for guests to ooh and ahh about, like a bookshelf holding heirloom wedding mementos, and not one, not two, but five mini groom’s cakes, all topped with icons representing Caleb’s favorite things, like sushi and golf.

The Passmans also opted to reimagine some traditions. Instead of a traditional guestbook, guests jotted messages on custom playing cards, and drinks were up for grabs before attendees took their seats to start the party early. In place of a bouquet and garter toss, Maggie and Caleb hit the stage to toss custom T-shirts into the crowd. Favors in the form of pink tennis balls from Sprig were also a hit. Maggie says she still gets snaps of wedding guests getting use of the custom merch.

Though a few things didn’t go according to plan, like the weather forecast causing them to get married under a tent instead of trees and have a shorter cocktail hour, Maggie feels everything worked out in a way that made the day special.

“I’d redo it tomorrow if I could,” she says.
