Room Tour: A local interior designer’s moody, blue bedroom makeover

A jewel-toned Art Deco rug laid the foundation for Anne Underwood’s bedroom transformation. The Underwood Interiors designer turned her personal space into a moody, cozy retreat using almost exclusively pieces she already owned.

She pulled shades of blue from the rug and incorporated them throughout the room. From there, she selected Schumacher “Fabric’s A Maze” embroidered fabric in the shade “Cadet” to upholster the bed. Next, she elevated the space by adding wall paneling before painting the room in Benjamin Moore’s “West Coast” to tie in with the upholstered bed frame.

“Adding the paneling detailing and then color-drenching the walls, that’s what really transformed the space,” she says.

Once she had her base, she began layering with different shapes, colors and fabrics, mostly from what she already had in her collection. She dressed her bed in Matouk’s “Daphne in Sea,” keeping the bedding simple to contrast with the rest of the room’s layered aesthetic. Tiger-print pillows and red curtains tie in with the rug’s many shades as final touches.

On each side of the bed, she placed navy nightstands covered in a soft material, similar to linen. She says she knew the darker blue against the lighter shade would be monochromatic yet still interesting. “When you use different shades of the same color, it can add a lot of depth,” she notes.

She finished off the project with vintage pieces, like the chair, stool and artwork she sourced from Fireside Antiques.

“I think the key is having some focal points and not having too many elements competing with one another,” Underwood says. “It keeps the eye moving, and it’s not too shocking or severe.”
