find out soon.
When Lissette Rivera learned jazztrumpeter Chris Botti will perform
with the Baton Rouge Symphonythis month, she didn’t waste any time
buying tickets andasking conductor
Timothy Muffitt for a favor.
In October, Riverasent an e-mail
to the symphony’s Web site askingwhether Muffitt could include Botti’s
version of “Time toSay Good-Bye” in
the program.
Seeing Botti in concerthas been on
Rivera’s “Bucket List,” and this StageIII
ovarian cancer survivor wasn’t going to
miss the opportunityto hear the song
performed live. When Botti performed
withthe symphony in 2009, Rivera
wasn’t up to attending, althoughshe
did the next best thing by playing the
musician’sCDs during her treatments.
“The music was so relaxing. It takes
you to another place,” she says.
After readingthe e-mail from Rivera,
who shared that Botti’s musicmade her
roughest days easier to endure, Muffitt
wrote back,saying, “I spoke with
Chris Botti’s manager and wewill do
everything possible to make
it happen.”
The concertwill be
another celebration for
Rivera, recently awarded a
diplomaas a one-year cancer
survivor. But, make no
mistake:Rivera found a way
to have fun from the get-go.
“I had two choices: I could
laugh itup or tough it up. I chose to
laugh,” saysRivera, who showed up at
Woman’s Hospital on her lastday of
chemo wearing a Marge Simpson-style
wig.
ThoughMuffitt still can’t promise that
Rivera’s wish will be granted,he says he
was definitely touched by the letter.
“It just speaks so much to the power
of music,”he says. “She’s giving it
everything she has, andwe’re really
happy for her.”
