Woodland Ridge is one neighborhood that truly embraces its past while looking to the future. Developed primarily in the late 1970s and 1980s, history is all around, beginning with the neighborhood’s main entrance.

As residents and guests enter the subdivision just off South Harrell’s Ferry, they are greeted by two majestic oak trees and an American flag flying high. At the base of the flagpole is a memorial plaque, honoring the troops from Woodland Ridge as well as the late Clint Boyd who served as homeowners association president for 17 years.

“It is a very special project we recently completed,” says Woodland Ridge Homeowners Association past president Sean Smith. “We honor those who served us as a neighborhood and as a country.”

As one continues their journey down Woodland Ridge Avenue, there is a feeling of quiet seclusion with even more oaks lining the median. In fact, the oaks are no more than 50 feet apart, a feature Boyd calls a masterpiece by the neighborhood’s developer. He also says the association is in the process of planting more oaks “past the bridge” on the road, mimicking the front of the neighborhood. Through work with the Department of Public Works and La. Certified arborist David Scott Courtright, the association is planting 15 new live oaks, improving the medians and working to preserve their prized trees.

As far as the 415 homes in Woodland Ridge, you won’t find many like these built these days. Large 2,500-3,000-sq.-ft. homes sit comfortably on very large lots, providing lots of room for families to run, or even expand their homes even further. Keeping the neighborhood looking fresh is attributed mostly to another of the neighborhood’s crowning jewels, Episcopal High School.

“It’s awesome to have the school in the heart of the neighborhood,” says Smith. “Families move in to be closer to where their children are educated and many of them, while they are here, upgrade their properties. There is constantly renovation and updating going on, keeping the neighborhood youthful.”

Activities in the neighborhood include an annual meeting at the EHS alumni house with the sheriff’s office and representatives present and Christmas decoration contests in categories such as best theme and most spirit. Forest Park is a short walk away via a connecting trail. Security is a big priority for the neighborhood with neighborhood watch, patrols and soon-to-be cameras at the entrances. Residents also stay informed via email and newsletters.

“We prefer to be pro-active instead of reactive,” says Smith.

Smith also shares plans by the city to soon make South Harrell’s Ferry five lanes and the neighborhood has already ensured those two live oaks in the front of the neighborhood are preserved.
